The authoring environment in Synopsys’ Technical Publications group is based on structured FrameMaker. When I joined Synopsys, I came with extensive experience with Arbortext Epic Editor; however, my experience with FrameMaker was limited to unstructured FrameMaker. This was true for most of the other writers and editors in the team as well, who only came with some basic exposure to unstructured FrameMaker. Therefore, there was a need to be formally trained in the tool that our group used extensively.
We were scouting around for technical writing training for structured FrameMaker, when one of my team mates suggested that we speak with Confai. After some discussions, we went ahead with Confai, who conducted a 20-hour classroom training for us. Whilst the session itself was structured, the flow and delivery was more informal (ideal for a small, cohesive team) and tailored to cater to our specific requirements.
I can confidently state that I found the training very useful and immediately relevant to the way we used structured FrameMaker at Synopsys. Because Confai had done a couple of technical writing projects for us in the past, they were also familiar with our templates, and that helped make the training more pertinent. Their trainer’s knowledge of FrameMaker was very good. What especially pleased me was that their after-service support was pretty good; everytime we had FrameMaker-related questions after ¬the training contract, I was able to get them answered by their FrameMaker trainer. I recommend their services to other firms that need their employees to be trained on FrameMaker.
